Methodolgy & Sources

The National Association of Universities and Institutions of Higher Education (ANUIES) is the primary organization responsible for data collection. The Ministry of Education, Ministry of International Affairs and the National Council of Science and Technology establish policies for international student data collection. Data are collected on academic level and type of host institution attended.

Under ANUIES' terms, an international student is defined as a student who has had the opportunity to form academically in a higher education institution of another country to obtain a complete academic degree or part of it. The figure for 2002, however, relies on UNESCO data and defintion.

Note: Figures for 2002 are based on UNESCO-UIS Global Digest 2006 Data (UNESCO, 2006).
