The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) oversees all international student data collection in Japan. The source of international student data is the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). Data have been collected on an annual basis from 1985 to the current year. Students are classified as foreign students if they are not citizens of the country for which the data are collected. Countries unable to provide data or estimates for non-nationals on the basis of their passports were requested to substitute data according to a related alternative criterion, e.g., the country of residence, the non-national mother tongue or non-national parentage. (OECD)
Data are collected on: gender; field of study; academic level; type of host institution attended; and degree/qualification/credential awarded.
For additional country data or other information on international students, please visit: www.oecd.org
Note: Figures for 2004 are based on UNESCO-UIS Global Digest 2006 Data (UNESCO, 2006).
