UK's Promotional Activities and Policies


United Kingdom's policies for promoting international higher education

Prime Minister's Initiative (PMI): launched in 1998, PMI improved marketing strategy for international education from the UK as a whole and from individual institutions. Targets to increase the number of international students in higher and further education were met and exceeded.

PMI for international education: Building on the success of the PMI, the Prime Minister’s Initiative for International Education was launched in April 2006. £7m will be invested to secure the UK’s position as a leader in international education and sustain the managed growth of UK international education delivered both in the UK and overseas.

Education UK Brand: launched in 2000 as part of the PMI, the brand is a focus point for marketing British institutions to foreign students. Managed by the British Council and available for use by all accredited UK institutions to assist and inform their marketing programs overseas. The brand has been refreshed and updated in 2006.

Science and Engineering Graduate Scheme (SEGS): launched in 2004, allows students who have graduated from eligible courses (physical sciences, mathematics and engineering) to remain and work in the country for one year.

Highly Skilled Migrant Programme (HSMP): launched in 2002, a point-based skilled immigration category, where applicants are scored according to educational qualifications, work experience, past earnings and achievements.

New UK-China Higher Education Program: launched in 2005 – a £4m fund to foster Anglo-Sino university links, including £2m to be spent on Anglo-Sino scholarships.

Changes to Visa System in 2006: international students who complete an undergraduate or graduate degree in certain areas (such as mathematics), will be able to work in the UK for up to 12 months.

UK-India Education and Research Initiative 2006: provides £12m of government funding for 40 UK award programmes for Indian students; support for 70 UK-India collaborative research projects.

Education UK Partnership: Launched in April 2005, the Education UK Partnership is a national membership organisation that brings together the complementary strengths of UK education providers and the British Council.
