Sweden's Promotional Activities and Policies

Sweden's policies for promoting international higher education

A national strategy for internationalization of higher education

In order to bring about continuous and systematic work on internationalization, the government has presented an overall strategy for the internationalization of higher education. The following broad objectives are expounded in detail in the strategy:

  • 1. Sweden must be an attractive country for foreign students to study in.
  • 2. Higher education graduates must be attractive in the labor market in Sweden and internationally.
  • 3. Universities and other higher education institutions must conduct active internationalization efforts so as to enhance the quality of their education and promote understanding of other countries and of international conditions and relations.
  • 4. Obstacles to internationalization must be eliminated, in Sweden and internationally.
  • 5. Follow-up of international activities in the higher education system must be developed and improved.

The degree structure will be changed from 2007 to conform with the ongoing European reform work in higher education under the Bologna Process, facilitating credit transfer and transparency.

The Swedish Institute, SI, promotes the interest for Sweden as a study destination via the official web-site, www.studyinsweden.se, educational fairs and conferences. SI is a government agency with the task to inform the world about Sweden and to organize exchanges with other countries in the spheres of culture, education, research and public life in general. This includes scholarship programs for foreign and Swedish students.
