Slowdown in growth of international graduate applications

April 14, 2008

According to CGS, the initial snapshot of applications from prospective international students to US graduate schools for fall 2008 found an increase of three per cent, a marked slowdown after increases of nine per cent last year and 12 per cent in 2006.  Overall, the number of applications is still 16 per cent lower than it was in 2003; moreover, 38 per cent of respondents reported a decline from 2007 to 2008 in applications.  There is a noticeable slowdown in growth from the two biggest sending countries, China and India, and in the critical fields of science and engineering.
